Being given a long term travel assignment at work can be uprooting to say the least. If you are one of those employees who are being sent away on a long term job assignment in another country, there is plenty of planning that must go into the move.
Once you have figured out where you are living abroad and have gotten travel plans settled, it’s time to start thinking about what you are going to do with the stuff you have in your home here.
While it may seem a bit daunting, you actually have a couple of different options to consider before making your big move.
Your first option, of course, is to hold a massive yard sale and sell everything. This is going to allow you to move to your new location without having to worry about what to do with your things, and it is going to be able to give you a little bit of spending money on your way out the door.
However, a yard sale does have it’s drawbacks. For one, it really depends on how long your foreign assignment is, if you’re going to be gone for only six months, it might not be the best option. And then, obviously, when you return back home, you aren’t going to have your stuff anymore, so replacements will have to be bought again.
This is another option that you can choose. By subletting your house or apartment, it allows you to keep your home, but at the same time not have to worry about buying a home full of furniture upon your return. Plus, by subletting you should be able to cover the monthly cost of the home and maybe take in a little extra each month.
If you do decide to go this route, keep in mind that you should always have a trusted friend or family member on standby for the new tenants to contact in case something does go wrong. The last thing you want is to get a call in the middle of the night your time telling your your basement is flooded, 10,000 miles away!
Also, when going this route, consider renting out a small storage space for your most valuable possessions. You are not going to want to worry about those valuables or family heirlooms breaking while you are gone, a small storage space will keep your items safe and sound for the duration.
A third option for your family is if you do decide to sell your home or apartment is to put all of your possessions into a storage space. A storage space will be able to hold all of your goods and possessions for the entire time you are away at the fraction of the cost of rent or mortgage.
This is going to be the perfect option for you if you are going to be sent on a work assignment that is going to last a couple of years.
It also means you aren’t going to have the headache of worrying about making sure you can find tenants to rent your home, or needing to have people to be around in case of emergency, or dealing with any unexpected costs that come with home ownership while you are away. All of that can provide a peace of mind while you are away.
So, you have a couple of different options to consider if you have just found out you are going to be moving away on a work assignment. Each of these options have different benefits, but it’s important to consider what is going to work the best for you and your family.
