4 Quick Things to Know about Life in Indianapolis

A 2019 study done by United Van Lines showed that last year, more people moved into Indianapolis than out, which is the first time this has happened in years. There are plenty of good reasons to move into Indy, from the low cost of living to the plethora of sports teams to enjoy.

If you’re looking to make Naptown your home city, here are X things to know about life in Indianapolis.

1. Cost of living in Indianapolis

As we mentioned earlier, life in Circle City is affordable. In fact, it’s one of the top ten most affordable cities in 2019 according to U.S. News. According to the rankings, the average median salary is a little more than $48,000, but only 20.72% of these incomes need to be used on rent, mortgages, utilities, and taxes.

A few things that help this are the low cost of housing, the average median home price is a little under $174,000, which is more than $50,000 less than the national average.

2. You can find job in Indy

Another perk of that low cost of living is plenty of job opportunities over the past few years, with industries such as healthcare, tourism, and sports really leading the way. 

More than 90 national companies headquarter in the city, such as the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly & Co., RIC Hospitality Holdings Inc., athletic apparel company Finish Line, and even the NCAA.

3. Know your Indy neighborhoods

Like all major cities, Indianapolis has a number of neighborhoods from you to choose from, each with its own distinct flavor and experiences for you to enjoy and reflect. For instance, 16 Tech in Riverside is Downtowns’s new technology district and offers the unique opportunity to live in Stadium Lofts, made in the original confines of the old Bush Stadium. 4. Own a car, or not, in Indy

The Crossroads of America is a great place to own a car. Being the focal point for a large number of interstates, a number of great places to check out—from Chicago to Louisville—are within a few short hours. But even though cars are a great place to get around outside and inside the city, Indy offers a number of great ways to get around.

Given its relative flatness, owning a bicycle is great in Indianapolis, not to mention the great trails such as Mono, Pogue’s Run, or the Cultural Trail that connect much of the city. And if biking isn’t your thing, try out BlueIndy, a rideshare program within the city.
