What Makes Garland stand out in Dallas-Fort Worth?

In the sprawling metropolitan area that is Dallas-Fort Worth, you can get easily lost in the shuffle of millions of people the same way a suburb can get swallowed up in the more than 200 cities and towns that makeup the metro.

Roughly half an hour north-northeast of downtown Dallas sits Garland, TX, 57 square miles of the wonderful DFW that nearly 240,000 people call home. So, what makes Garland unique over the other cities? Here are five ways Garland stands out.

1. Jobs are coming to Garland

According to BestPlaces.net, Garland is set to see some fantastic job growth in the coming years, and may have already seen some now. Its recent job growth at the time of publication was 3.28%—more than double the nation’s—and it’s future job growth is expected to be 40.47%.

For instance, in late 2019, All Quality and Services Inc., a company that makes computer parts, announced it will relocate to Garland, bringing with it 150 new full-time positions as well as an estimated $8.1 million annual payroll.

2. Checkout Garland entertainment

Another thing that stands out in Garland is its entertainment, for instance, be sure to checkout The Plaza Theater. This former movie theater has been converted to hold live shows and rents out to a number of groups. And between the great shows as well as the comfortable movie-theater seats, it can be a great experience for a night out with a date or the family.

Speaking of family, another favorite pastime is NickelRama. While there is a small entrance fee, games are set to take nickels—not quarters—meaning for less than $10, you can have hours of playtime from pinball to classic arcade video games.

3. Cowboys shop in Garland—and they have the hats to prove it

Part of life in Texas is what you wear, and while there are many imitators, nothing beats the original Texas headwear. Garland is home to the Resistol, which has made hats and other western wear for nearly a century, and most of its history has been spent in the city.

You can find a wide assortment of cowboy hats, including a 10-gallon hat—which really only holds about 3 quarts.

4. Know the Garland Firewheel

Believe it or not, the city has its own favorite flower: the Firewheel. This fiery bit of flora can be seen across the city each spring and summer, but you’ll see its name year-round as the sunny flower is honored by the Firewheel Town Center, the Firewheel Golf Park, and even the Firewheel neighborhood.

5. Bring the Beef in Garland

While all areas have its favorite fare, beef is king when it comes to Garland food choices. Locals love to enjoy it in all forms too, such as Meshack’s BBQ Shack beef sandwich, on a burger at the Beef House, and even the Bo 7 mon (seven course of beef) at Dong Que vietnamese restaurant.

Now, this is just a brief list of what makes Garland unique, and we’d love to hear more in the comments below!
